The DJ Basin, where we hold approximately 860,000 net acres, contains our largest U.S. onshore field at Wattenberg. Located in the north central part of Colorado, Wattenberg continues to grow and produces strong returns due to low operating costs and strong liquid volumes. Production from Wattenberg represents a majority of our onshore U.S. production. With a focus on continuous improvement through enhancements in drilling and completion procedures, we have become a top operator in the field.
We are actively applying new technology in our operations, including the use of horizontal drilling to increase recoveries of liquid-rich hydrocarbons from the Niobrara formation of the Wattenberg field. Our well completion and fracing strategies are improving production and reducing our drilling times. The performance of our latest wells demonstrates the improvements we have made. We drilled approximately 85 horizontal Niobrara wells in 2011; drilled approximately 200 horizontal wells in 2012; and plan to drill approximately 300 horizontal wells in 2013. We are focused on further accelerating the development of Wattenberg and continue to test the exploration opportunities in northern Colorado and southern Wyoming.
